Qualifications: MB.BCh
(WITS) - 1986 FCS (SA) OPHTH - 1994
Post qualification as an Ophthalmologist,
worked as Consultant Ophthalmologist for the University of the Witwatersrand at
St.John's Eye Hospital, Baragwanath and Johannesburg General Hospital from 1994
to 1998. During this period was Acting Head of Unit of an ophthalmic team seeing
on average 450 outpatients and 110 in-patients per day. Duties included clinical,
administrative and teaching of ophthalmology registrars, medical students and
ophthalmic nurses.
During this period: - became the
only ophthalmologist to-date to have been nominated for the Daubenton Prize as
Best Lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences. - initiated the first
Specialised Clinic at St.John's viz the Corneal Clinic, which achieved as one
of its successes a 500% increase in the number of corneal transplants being performed
at the Hospital. - underwent further training in topical anaesthesia
and phaco-emulsification in the UK on the Moorfields training circuit
In
1998 moved into Private Practice in Johannesburg, where I was in practice until
2001. During this period established a successful solo practice and was appointed
to the Management Board of the Optiklin Eye Hospital in Benoni. During this period
also acted as Visiting Consultant to De Beers and Afrox Health in Botswana.
In
2001 relocated to Somerset West and began in associate practice with Dr A.Bougas,
who has subsequently retired and transferred his patient files to Dr Falletisch.
The practice currently is based in Somerset West in the Fairview Centre,
Caledon Street with a satellite practice in the Kuilsriver Netcare Hospital.
During
the period since 2001:
- Began the Eye Clinic at Eersteriver Provincial
Hospital on pro-bona basis for indigent patients. This Clinic has now grown to
being the flagship cataract facility for the Western Cape Dept of Health, doing
+/- 2000 cataract procedures/year - Elected to the Physician's Advisory
Board of the Netcare Kuilsriver Hospital - Elected to the Remuneration
Committee of the Peninsula Eye Clinic - Received an award from the
MEC for Health, Western Cape in recognition for services rendered in establishing
the Eersteriver Eye Clinic
Current practice is General Ophthalmology with
a bias to Cataract and Refractive, and a further interest in diabetic eye disease.
The strabismic and oculo-plastics service offered is strengthened by the skills
of Rimona Lamprecht and Dr Nicky Cockburn, who are employed within the practice.
